Miner Named Director of Campus Recreation, Western Illinois University

Jim Miner '72 '73 has been named director of campus  recreation at Western Illinois University, effective July 1. Miner replaces Jim Keeney '65 '67, who had served as  director since 1996. Keeney will direct special projects in the division of student services from July 1 until his retirement  in December. Keeney’s role will include serving as liaison on major projects such as the Thompson Hall dining addition and Bayliss Henninger dining renovation.

"Jim Miner has significant experience in student services  programming at Western which will assist the University in its continued development of outstanding recreational facilities and  programs for the campus," Vice President for Student Services Garry Johnson said. As director of campus recreation Miner will be responsible for the facilities and programs of the Student Recreation Center,  intramural programs, north and south campus recreation facilities including two fitness centers, outdoor playing fields and the integration of the Harry Mussatto Golf Course into the recreation services program. In 1997 Western opened its Student Recreation  Center which provides students with an indoor walking/jogging track, multipurpose gymnasium court space, weight rooms, state-of-the-art  cardiovascular equipment, aquatics center and meeting space. 

Since August 1997 Miner has served as associate director of campus recreation, responsible for programs and services. Miner joined the student activities center staff at WIU in 1974 and served  as director of student activities from 1979 until 1997. Prior to working at Western he was on the professional staff of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Miner, a native of Macomb, is  a recipient of the WIU Alumni Achievement Award and the Administrative Community Service Award. He was recognized by the National Association for Campus Activities in 1991 as the recipient of the outstanding
programmer award and in 1994 he received the WIU recreation, park  and tourism department’s distinguished service award.
